Horny Goat Weed - Epimedium Sagittatum
Epimedium is a genus of about 25 species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae.
They are native to southern Europe, and central, southern and eastern Asia.
Epimedium is also known as Barrenwort, Bishop's Hat, Fairy Wings, Horny Goat weed, or Yin Yang Huo in Chinese.
"Horny Goat Weed" was derived from the observation that when goats consumed its leaves, they began copulating.
The traditional use of Horny Goat Weed is treatment of fatigue and boosting sex drive. It has also been used for liver and kidney tonification.
Horny goat weed is known to have improved the life of chronic renal failure patients in a Chinese study.
It is also known to lower high blood pressure and it does not reduce it below normal if used by people with normal blood pressure.
The mechanism of how horny goat weed works for increasing sexual desire is still unknown.
It is however well documented that horny goat weed indirectly increases the bodys production of testosterone.
It is also believed that horny goat weed may be able to restore levels of testosterone and thyroid hormones.
