Metamucil is a bulk-producing laxative and fibre supplement.
It contains psyllium husk that comes from the plant Plantago Ovate.
Psyllium is a concentrated source of soluble fibre that can be used to increase one's dietary fibre intake.
It is often used to treat constipation, hemorrhoids, diverticular disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
It is also clinically proven to reduce cholesterol when used as part of a low fat, low-cholesterol diet.
This product is the number one doctor and pharmacist recommended fibre supplement/bulk fibre laxative. It is available in powdered drink mixes, capsules, capsules plus calcium, and wafers.
When used as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, 7g per day of soluble fibre from psyllium husk may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol.
Each dose of Metamucil powder and Metamucil Fibre Wafers contains approximately 3.4 grams of psyllium husk (or 2.4 grams of soluble fibre).
Metamucil does have a fair amount of sugar in it. Its occasional use during pregnancy is considered safe. It is however recommended you increase the amount of fruit and vegetables you are eating, drink plenty of water and get exercise every day.
Side effects are very rare but may include the following:
Difficulty in swallowing
