They work mainly the oblique and the upper abs. This is because you of the spinal flexion and rotation. They also work your side obliques.
You do not have to go to the gym to perform these exercises. Train your abnominals every other day to give yourself enough recuperation time.
How to work out Obliques
Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and hands behind your head or your right hand touching the right ear and the left hand touching the left ear. You can place your knees on the floor or rest them on a bench.
Curl your upper body up to the right until your left elbow touches your right knee. Contract your abs and obliques as hard as you can throughout the movement.
Slowly lower to the starting position.
After completing a set of 10-15 reps on the left side, switch to your right side and do the same thing. Keep alternating the reps until you are done. Ensure you do not pull on your neck.
The same exercise can be done while seated on a fitness ball like in the pictures above.
