Benefits of Tribulus Terrestris

The herb Tribulus terrestris is also known as caltrop, puncture vine, yellow vine or goathead.

Tribulus terrestris is promoted as a testosterone booster for the purpose of building muscle and increasing sex drive.

It has been used in China for centuries for a wide variety of therapeutic purposes.

It is also used in in Indian ayurveda practice as a tonic and aphrodisiac. It is known as "gokshura" in Sanskrit.

The active ingredient in tribulus is protodioscin. It is extracted from the fruit of the herb. The fruit contains several other compounds including resins, alkaloids, natural oils, and tannins.

Independent studies have suggested that Tribulus extract does increase testosterone levels. It however leaves them in the normal range. This means it may not increase muscle development much. It may however be beneficial for those whose testosterone is below normal.

Tribulus increases testosterone by increasing Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) which in turn stimulates the production of LH and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH).

Testosterone plays a role in muscle-building and increasing libido.

It is also known to have a positive effect on bone marrow activity (for red blood cell production) and the immune system.

Tribulus acts as both a libido enhancer and muscle-building supplement due to its ability to boost testosterone. Testosterone in turn boosts lean muscle to fat ratio. Testosterone is the biological source of a man’s sex drive.

After the age of 30, a man’s testosterone production decreases at the rate of about 2% per year when a substance called luteninizing hormone, responsible for prompting the body to manufacture testosterone, steadily slows down.

Tribulus works by increasing levels of luteninizing hormone. This leads to a profuse production of testosterone.

Tribulus is not a hormone and does not disturb the balance of hormones in the body.

Tribulus terrestris can be used to treat:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

It can also improve sexual function and act as a libido enhancer and bodybuilding supplement.

Tribulus increases male libido and helps with related symptoms such as premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. Those who use tribulus experience increased energy and vitality. It also helps to enhance muscularity and strength.

    Side Effects of Tribulus Terrestris

No significant adverse effects have been reported from supplementation with Tribulus.

However, some users report an upset stomach. This can usually be counteracted by taking it with food.
